Leatherworking Leveling Guide for players below level 90

This Leatherworking guide will show you the fastest and cheapest way how to level your Leatherworking skill up from 1 to 700.

Leatherworking is the best combined with Skinning, and I highly recommend to level these professions together. It will be a lot easier to get the needed materials if you have Skinning. Check out my Skinning Leveling Guide if you want to level Skinning. You can also just buy the materials at the Auction House, but then you will need a lot of gold.

If you are low on gold, I recommend you to try this Gold Making Guide, it can help you to make loads of gold.

If you are still leveling your character or you just started a new alt, I recommend you to use a leveling guide. You can level your character to level 110 in 8 days with this guide.

Leatherworking Leveling Guide 1 - 55

First, visit any trainer in the main cities of old Azeroth - just ask a guard, and learn Leatherworking Apprentice.

Check out my Farming Guides if you wan to farm the leathers instead of buying them.

You should start with Light Leather farming if you want to farm the leathers.

NOTE: You can buy the threads, dyes, and salt from Leatherworking Supply vendors near your trainer.

  • 1-20
    19 x [Light Leather] - 57 Ruined Leather Scraps

Make the next recipe if you don't have Ruined Leather Scraps.

55 - 130

Learn Leatherworking Journeyman. Requires level 10.

  • 85-100
    15 x [Fine Leather Belt] - 90 Light Leather, 30 Coarse Thread

Keep these, you will need them.

Check out my Medium Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

IMPORTANT! I must also mention that later on you will need 20 Heavy Hide to level leatherworking, and while you farm the hides you will get a bunch of Medium Hide, Medium Leather, and Heavy Leather. I recommend to check out my Heavy Hide farming guide if you have a level 60+ character, and farm the Heavy Hide before you farm Heavy Leather and Medium Leather. Farming the 20 Heavy Hide can take a few hours, so don't forget to check the Auction House, sometimes you can find cheap Heavy Hide.

130 - 205

Learn Leatherworking Expert. Requires level 20.

Check out my Heavy Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

  • 155-165
You will need the Cured Heavy Hides later.

    20 x [Cured Heavy Hide] - 20 Heavy Hide, 60 Salt

If you have skinning, then visit my Heavy Hide farming guide. Don't forget to check the Auction House, sometimes you can find cheap Heavy Hide.

Below you can find an alternative way if you don't have any Heavy Hides at all, which is usually the case, since Heavy Hide has pretty low drop rate. But if for example you can get 5 Heavy Hides, you should stop making Barbaric Leggings at 195 and start making Guardian Gloves.

    155-180 - [Heavy Armor Kit] or [Hillman's Cloak] - 175 Heavy Leather
180-190 - [Guardian Pants] or [Barbaric Leggings] - 156 Heavy Leather, 26 Bolt of Silk Cloth or 100 Heavy Leather, 10 Moss Agate
190-200 - [Barbaric Leggings] - 130 Heavy Leather, 13 Moss Agate The [Barbaric Leggings] recipe is sold by these NPCs.
  • 190-200
10 x [Guardian Gloves] - 40 Heavy Leather, 10 Cured Heavy Hide, 10 Silken Thread

Check out my Thick Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

205 - 275

Learn Leatherworking Artisan. Requires level 35.

Check out my Rugged Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

275 - 350

Visit your trainer learn and Leatherworking Master. Requires level 50.

If you are still leveling your character and you are level 60, then at this point you can choose to go to Outland or Northrend. I recommend going to Northrend because it's a easier to level Leatherworking using Borean Leather. Check out my Borean Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

  • 275-350
    75 x [Borean Armor Kit] - 300 Borean Leather

Check the Auction House for [Borean Leather Scraps]. You can transform 5 of them into [Borean Leather], but don't right click the Leather Scraps, there is actually a recipe that give you skill-ups, use that.

If 5 x Borean Leather Scraps cost less than twice the price of a single Borean Leather, it's worth to buy because you get skill points twice, first for turning them into Borean Leather, then when you craft the armor kits. (assuming you can buy at least 20 of them to make an armor kit)

If you have any Knothide Leather Scraps from Skinning, you can turn them into [Knothide Leather] between 300-310, then make as many [Knothide Armor Kit] as you can.

350 - 450

Visit your trainer and learn Leatherworking Grand Master. Requires level 65.

Check out my Savage Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

  • 350-450
    100 x [Savage Armor Kit] - 500 Savage Leather

Check the Auction House for [Savage Leather Scraps]. You can transform 5 of them into [Savage Leather], but don't right click the Leather Scraps, there is actually a recipe that give you skill-ups, use that.

If 5 x Savage Leather Scraps cost less than twice the price of a single Savage Leather, it's worth to buy because you get skill points twice, first for turning them into Savage Leather, then when you craft the armor kits. (assuming you can buy at least 25 of them to make an armor kit)

450 - 500

Visit your trainer and learn Leatherworking Illustrious. Requires level 75.

  • 450-460
    10 x [Tsunami Boots] - 70 Savage Leather, 10 Eternium Thread

You can buy Eternium Threads from Leatherworking Supply vendors and you could also make any other item that requires 7 Savage Leather.
  • 460-470
    10 x [Savage Cloak] - 70 Savage Leather, 10 Eternium Thread

Or any other orange item that requires 7 Savage Leather.
  • 496-499
1 x [Cloak of Beast] - 8 Heavy Savage Leather, 2 Volatile Earth, 2 Volatile Air, 2 Volatile Water, 2 Volatile Fire

500 - 600

Visit your trainer and learn Zen Leatherworking. Requires level 80.

Visit my Exotic Leather farming guide if you want to farm the leathers.

  • 500-526
13 x [Exotic Leather] - 65 Sha-Touched Leather Sha-Touched Leather drops from level 85-86 mobs, but since mobs scale to your level with the new 7.3.5 patch, you can't find level 85 mobs with level 90+ characters.

You have to buy it from the Auction House, or if you have any character without profession, you can just learn Skinning with it and go to Pandaria with level 1 skinning and you will get Sha-Touched Leather instead of Exotic Leather at least until you reach Skinning 500.

From this point I will usually list two recipes because the droprate of Exotic Leather and Prismatic Scale seems pretty close right now. Choose the leather type that's cheaper for you, or if you farm your own leathers mix it up to make use all of your leathers.

  • 570 - 600
Once you reach 570 you can purchase vendor recipes for the last 30 points (You can actually buy a few of them at 555). The Leatherworking recipes are on a vendor in Vale of Eternal Blossoms. You can enter Vale of Eternal Blossoms after completing the quest A Celestial Experience (requires level 87). After you completed the quest, you can find Krogo Darkhide (Horde) in Shrine of Two Moons and Tanner Pang (Alliance) in Shrine of Seven Stars.

You'll need 1 Spirit of Harmony to purchase a recipe and you only need one recipe. You can get Spirit of Harmony by combining 10 Motes of Harmony. Motes are dropped by every mob in Pandaria, even in dungeons. The drop rate is low, so it may take you 2 hours to collect 10 motes.

Choose one recipe from the Contender's Armor recipes. It doesn't matter which one because if one of them requires more leathers, it will give you more skill points. You will need around 150 Exotic Leather or Prismatic Scale.

600 - 700

This part requires level 90.

Things change a bit in Warlords of Draenor because you no longer learn the next rank from your trainer. You have to get a [Draenor Leatherworking] scroll to upgrade your maximum Leatherworking skill to 700. This scroll will also teach you a few basic recipes which you will use to level Leatherworking.

There are three ways to obtain this scroll:

You’ll never have to switch back to a website, or even the in-game main map to see where you have to go or what’s next. The guide is available for both Horde and Alliance.
