This guide has 3 Engineering specialization builds with step-by-step point allocation. One for crafting profession tools and accessories, one for combat gear (goggles, bracers, guns), and one for making gold with Recycle.
Getting Knowledge Points
This guide is only about builds and where to put your points. If you need help finding Knowledge Points or need a leveling path, check out these guides:
Recipes & Knowledge Points Leveling Guide (1 - 100)
Timeline & Unlock Pace
You can get around 40-50 Knowledge Points on your first day. Most come from first crafts, one-time treasures, and the renown book. After that, you get about 20 per week from patron orders, weekly drops, your trainer quest, and treatises.
The builds below are based on that first 40-50 point mark, and I added suggestions for what to do as you get more points.
Specialization Overview
| Specialization | Description |
|---|---|
| Market Mobility | Profession tools and accessories for Engineering, Tailoring, Jewelcrafting, Fishing, and Mining. |
| Combat Analytics | Goggles, bracers, boots, and guns. This is where all your combat gear recipes are. |
| Recycling | Improves Recycling yield and gives you Resourcefulness, Multicraft, and Ingenuity bonuses for all Engineering crafts. This is also where you get a big chunk of your crafting skill. |
| Bits and Bots | Bots, gadgets, and utility items. Also gives you extra procs when crafting or recycling reagents. |
Best Profession Gear and Stats for Engineering
Which stat you want depends on what you're crafting. The simple rule: if a craft can Multicraft, use Multicraft. If it can't, use Resourcefulness.
How do you know if it can Multicraft? Check the recipe in your profession window. If you see Multicraft listed on the right side, it can Multicraft. If not, it can't.
- Reagents can Multicraft, so use a Multicraft tool with a Multicraft enchant when you're mass crafting those.
- Profession tools, accessories, Recycling, and combat gear can't Multicraft, so use a Resourcefulness tool with a Resourcefulness enchant.
If you're doing both mass reagents and gear orders, keep two tools and swap between them.
Builds & Talent Trees
Which Build Should You Choose?
I made 3 builds, each for a different goal. Pick the one that fits you best. The Profession Gear build is complete. The other two are skeleton builds for now, I'll update them with exact points once I finish testing.
- Profession Gear: Focuses on crafting profession tools and accessories for other professions.
- Combat Gear: Goggles, bracers, and guns. Good if you want your own goggles or want to fill crafting orders.
- Recycling: For making gold with the Recycle spell. You break down reagents and sell the mats you get back.
Profession Gear Build
If you want to craft profession tools and accessories, your goal is max quality as fast as possible. You need everything that gives skill points to your chosen gear type.
Unlocking Recipes and Getting Skill
- Put 10 points into Mandatory Tools or Finishing Touches, depending on which path you want to prioritize. You get 3 recipes from this.
- Put 25 points into the root node to get extra skill for all profession gear, and you'll also unlock another recipe in the other sub-spec.
- Put 30 points into Recycling to get a huge skill bonus for all Engineering recipes.
1. Market Mobility
2. Recycling
Max Quality and Resourcefulness
- 30 points into your chosen profession gear sub-spec. Now you can craft it at max quality without Concentration if you have Engineering at 100 and at least blue 3 profession gear. If you're not filling crafting orders, you can skip this and just use Concentration instead.
- (Optional) Put 30 points into Resourcefulness to save materials. This works on crafting orders too. You keep the saved mats even when using other players' materials. You can skip this for now and unlock more gear types at max quality first.
1. Market Mobility
2. Recycling
Next Steps
You're basically done at this point. You can start putting points into the rest of the profession gear trees for more recipes. You need to max out each sub-spec if you want to craft that gear type at max quality without Concentration.
Combat Gear Build
Start here if you want to craft goggles, bracers, boots, and guns for your own characters or crafting orders.
Unlocking Recipes
- Put 25 points into the root node to unlock all 4 sub-specializations.
- Put 35 points into your chosen slot.

Max Quality and Resourcefulness
- 30 points into Recycling to get a huge skill bonus for all Engineering recipes. Now you can craft combat gear at max quality without Concentration if you have Engineering at 100 and at least blue 3 profession gear.
- (Optional) Put 30 points into Resourcefulness to save materials. This works on crafting orders too. You keep the saved mats even when using other players' materials. You can skip this for now and unlock more gear types at max quality first.

Next Steps
You're basically done at this point. You can start putting points into the rest of the combat gear trees for more recipes. You need to max out each sub-spec if you want to craft that gear type at max quality without Concentration.
Recycling Build
Pick this build if you want to make gold with Recycle.
I looked through every Engineering recipe. I think the only good sellers are Gold Quality Reagents from Recycling (for players rushing high-end gear) and
Emergency Soul Link. But Soul Link won't really sell until Mythic+ opens.
I haven't seen the new scope enchants in any Hunter guides yet, so I don't know if they'll sell.
Rushing Gold Quality Reagents
- Put 30 points into Recycling.
- 10 points into Bits and Bots
If you get green profession tools, you should already be able to recycle Gold Quality reagents (if you use Gold Quality bolts). I'm not sure if this is a bug, but that's how it worked for me on the beta.
Note: This only worked for recycling base reagents like bolts, alloys, and pigments. For optional reagents you need more skill, but you probably won't recycle those anyway.
1. Recycling
2. Bits and Bots

Getting Resourcefulness and Multicraft
Now grab the Resourcefulness and Multicraft nodes in Recycling. This saves materials and gives you extra procs when crafting.
If you only Recycle, just grab Resourcefulness and you are basically done. If you also craft reagents, grab Multicraft as well.

Gold Quality in Everything
Max these out in this order:- 20 points into Bits and Bots
- 30 points into Bits. Now you can craft Gold Quality
Soul Sprocket without Concentration. - Put 30 points into Bots if you also want to craft Gold Quality
Emergency Soul Link without Concentration.
If buying Gold Quality mats for
Emergency Soul Link is profitable, you can max Bots first instead of Bits.
