New Dragonflight Inscription features

There are a lot of new stats added to professions in Dragonflight, so here is a quick explanation for some of these.

Recipe Difficulty

Recipe Difficulty shows you how much profession skill is required to make a recipe at the highest quality. You can see your current profession Skill below the Recipe Difficulty stat. Your Skill comes from your base profession skill, specializations, profession equipment, racials, and using high-quality reagents. So, your profession skill can go well above 100.

Item Quality

Every crafted piece of Inscription weapon or Trinket have 5 different qualities. Inscription Crafted Reagents, Enchantments, and Consumable items have 3 different qualities.

Basically, if you have higher skill, you can make higher-ilvl gear, higher-quality consumables that give more stat, and higher-quality reagents that give more profession skill when used in recipes.

Inspiration, Multicraft, Resourcefulness

  • Inspiration: Each time you craft something, there is a chance you get Inspired and craft the recipe with some bonus profession skill, so you can craft an item with higher quality than you could normally. This stat is only helpful when you craft recipes with higher Recipe Difficulty than your current Skill.
  • Resourcefulness: You have a chance to use fewer reagents.
  • Multicraft: You have a chance to craft additional items. (doesn't work on crafted gear, only consumables and reagents)

Dragon Isles Inscription Knowledge

Dragon Isles Inscription Knowledge points are the "talent points" you can put into your profession specialization to learn new skills, stats, and bonuses.

Crafting Orders

Crafting Orders are a new way for players to request a crafter to craft something for them. The interface looks like the Auction House, but instead of players posting Auctions, it will be filled with Crafting Orders you can complete as a Scribe.

Completing crafting orders can give you skill points if you complete orders for items that would normally give you a skill point.

How to Complete Crafting Orders

Clicking on the Crafting Orders tab at the bottom of your profession window will open the Crafting Order UI, where you can browse Crafting Orders posted by other players. You must be near a Crafting Table for your profession to access Crafting Orders.

Inscription Crafting Table location

You can find the Inscription crafting table in Valdrakken at the location in the picture below.

Shopping List

This is the list of materials needed to level Inscription to 100.

You will see items in this list that you could have crafted yourself (like the inks). I recommend buying them instead of crafting them because higher-level scribes can craft them below the cost of materials, so it's just better to buy them from the Auction House once they stop giving skill points.

Racial Bonuses

Nightborne characters have +15 Inscription skill because of their passive, and Kul Tiran characters have +5. Any extra Inscription skill means recipes stay orange for more points. You can save some gold by doing lower-level recipes for more points.

Milling Table

Milling can be used to mill 5 herbs for 2-5 pigments.

Herb Pigment Ink
5x Hochenblume 2-5x Shimmering Pigment Used in all three Inks.
5x Saxifrage 2-5x Blazing Pigment Blazing Ink
5x Writhebark 2-5x Flourishing Pigment Flourishing Ink
5x Bubble Poppy 2-5x Serene Pigment Serene Ink

1 - 15

Use Dragon Isles Milling on these herbs:

Make sure that you don't mill all your Writhebark. Keep at least 35!

First Craft Bonus

You will get 1x Dragon Isles Inscription Knowledge talent points each time you craft something for the first time. Dragon Isles Inscription Knowledge is valuable and has a weekly cap from other sources. So, instead of leveling Inscription and then going back to craft grey recipes, this leveling guide is designed to get the "First Craft Bonus" from most recipes while they give you skill points.

15 - 20

Buy 1x Virtuoso Inking Set, 120x Glittering Parchment, 23x Iridescent Water, and 23x Draconic Vial from Gohfyrr in Valdrakken.

Craft these:

  • 6x Blazing Ink - 6x Iridescent Water, 6x Draconic Vial, 6x Blazing Pigment, 12x Shimmering Pigment
  • 9x Flourishing Ink - 9x Iridescent Water, 9x Draconic Vial, 9x Flourishing Pigment, 18x Shimmering Pigment
  • 8x Serene Ink - 8x Iridescent Water, 8x Draconic Vial, 8x Serene Pigment, 16x Shimmering Pigment
  • 1x Chilled Rune - 5x Rousing Frost, 1x Serene Ink

They all make 2x Inks, so you will end up with double the numbers above. You will need 12x Blazing, 18x Flourishing, and 16x Serene.

20 - 32

You will need Runed Writhebark and Burnished Ink later, so you should craft them now while they give skill points.

  • 7x Runed Writhebark - 35x Rousing Air, 35x Writhebark, 7x Flourishing Ink, 7x Chilled Rune
  • 4x Burnished Ink - 8x Blazing Ink, 8x Flourishing Ink, 8x Serene Ink

Inscription Specializations

When you hit 25, you will unlock Inscription specializations.

Which Specialization to choose first?

I recommend choosing Runebinding as your first specialization. (you can learn all 3 as you level up your profession)

You will need 50 skill points to unlock the second specialization and 75 for the third.

Where should you put your Dragon Isles Inscription Knowledge talent points?

Don't spend any points yet. I recommend leveling your profession to 85 first. You will need 20 points to unlock a recipe that you will use to level Inscription. (more on this later)

32 - 39

Craft these to get your First Craft bonuses. Make sure to craft the profession equipment first and then the Runes.

Equip the Scribe's Fastened Quill. You can destroy the Virtuoso Inking Set. You won't need it anymore.

You should be at 39 or 40. Make a few more from any runes if you didn't reach 39.

39 - 45

3x Cosmic Ink - 3x Awakened Frost, 3x Serene Ink, 6x Burnished Ink, 3x Runed Writhebark

45 - 51

Make one from each missive:

52 - 60

12x Draconic Missive of the Fireflash - 12x Glittering Parchment, 12x Blazing Ink, 12x Chilled Rune

60 - 85

80x Vantus Rune: Vault of the Incarnates - 180x Burnished Ink, 80x Chilled Rune

The recipe will be green for the last 13 points, so it's possible you have to make more. This recipe is still cheaper than other methods, even if you have make 10 for one skill point.

85 - 100

From this point, almost every recipe that gives you skill points requires a Spark of Ingenuity. This crafting reagent Binds on Pickup (BoP), so you can't just buy it from the Auction House.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to learn the Crackling Codex of the Isles and getting Spark of Ingenuity for crafting 5x Off-hands. Step 2 is the most time-consuming, but it's account-wide, and it's something you probably already completed.

Step 1. #Learning the Off-hand recipe

  1. Put 10 points into Runebinding specialization.
  2. Learn Runic Scripture sub-specialization on the right.
  3. Put 10 points into Runic Scripture.
  4. Learn the Codexes sub-specialization. This will teach you the Crackling Codex of the Isles recipe.

You will use this recipe to level to 100. This is the easiest to get and the cheapest to make.

Step 2. #Dragonflight campaign quests

If you see world quests on your world map, you have already completed this step.

To get Spark of Ingenuity, you must complete the Dragonflight main story campaign quests until you unlock World Quests. This is ACCOUNT-WIDE, so you only need to complete these quests with one of your characters. If you open your quest log, you will find these quests at the top in the campaign section under the "Dragonflight" title.

Step 3. #Engine of Innovation Questline

Pick up the Learning Ingenuity quest from Therazal. This quest will start the Engine of Innovation Questline that will award you with Spark of Ingenuity.

Talk to Greyzik Cobblefinger to complete Learning Ingenuity and pick up the Jump-Start? Jump-Starting! quest.

You don't have to do it again if you have already completed the Engine of Innovation Questline with one of your characters. Talk to Greyzik Cobblefinger to skip the quests, and then talk to Maiden of Inspiration to get your 5x Spark of Ingenuity.

Otherwise, you must complete the entire Engine of Innovation Questline until you get all five Spark of Ingenuity.

Step 4. #Leveling to 100

Craft 5x Crackling Codex of the Isles to reach 100.

5x Crackling Codex of the Isles - 25x Awakened Air, 100x Glittering Parchment, 50x Cosmic Ink, 20x Chilled Rune, 25x Runed Writhebark

Getting More Spark of Ingenuity with Alts

Unfortunately, if you already used up your five Spark of Ingenuity on something else, you can't get more on one character. However, you can use the crafting order system to send crafting orders to your characters, so you can get more from your alts or by creating trial characters.

Creating a trial character

If you have two level 58 alt characters, you can skip this part and use them instead of creating trials.

  1. Go to the character selection screen and click "Create New Character" in the bottom left corner.
  2. On the character creation page, tick the "Class Trial" box in the bottom left corner.
  3. Choose any class and talents, then create your Character.
  4. Go to the portal room in Orgrimmar/Stormwind and click on the Valdrakken portal.

Skipping quests to get 5x Sparks

  1. Talk to Greyzik Cobblefinger about skipping the quests, and then talk to Maiden of Inspiration.
  2. Talk to the crafting order NPC Clerk Silverpaw in Valdrakken.
  3. Click on Armor -> Miscellaneous -> Held In Off-hand, then click "Search" and pick Crackling Codex of the Isles
  4. Change Public Order to Personal Order in the top right, then type in your main character name.
  5. You don't have to fill in materials besides the Spark of Ingenuity in the "Spark" slot. You can fill the rest of the materials with your main.
  6. Send 5 crafting orders to your main.

Crafting Crackling Codex of the Isles

  1. Log in with your main character, and go to the Inscription crafting table in Valdrakken. (scroll back to the crafting order section above in the guide if you don't know where it is)
  2. Open your profession window and click the Crafting Orders tab at the bottom.
  3. Click on the Personal Tab and complete the crafting orders from your alts.
